The voice behind the invitation

Maurice Calhoun speaks to the two rooms where a leader's real decisions get made — the one with an agenda and the one with a hymnal. Three decades, two tracks, no act.

How it got here

03

Before the stage

The office nobody thanks

Three decades as a chief architect, program manager, father and community leader, where the work was mostly holding direction steady while everyone else took the photographs. That is where the first talk came from — the quiet decision is always made by someone who will not be credited for it.

The turn

A purposeful decision

The turn was a death. Derrick Moore — a DeKalb County teacher and coach — drowned saving a girl he had never met, and the question would not let go: what does it actually cost an ordinary person to lead like that? The answer became the C.O.S.T. model of selfless leadership, and then a whole way of teaching — pressure, pain, scars, testimony — written under the name The Hope Dealer.

Now

One home for the work

The work has a home now. Verse & Vine, a ministry of Beloved Enterprises, keeps the Bible, the poetry, the teaching and the books in one place — so people read with intention, gather courage, and turn faith into something with work in it. The messages travel the rest of the way: college lectures, podcasts, boardrooms and congregations, with the giving behind them aimed at homeless families, anti-trafficking care and families who buried someone suddenly.

Trained for this

04

Raised

Grand Park, Florida

A Florida childhood, a long way from any stage, and the first place a voice gets tested.

Trained

Systems engineering — Georgia Tech and the University of Miami

Engineering is where the standard came from: a structure either carries the load or it doesn't, and no speech fixes a bad beam.

Practised

Senior manager, three decades

Healthcare, insurance, government operations, telecommunications, banking and financial services, supply chain and logistics, and educational institutions — the rooms where plans either hold or they don't.
